The trust of merchants: some reflections through Bolognese examples between 14th and 15th centuries
Abstract
At the end of the 14th century, merchants faced the challenge of creating a safe, fast and economically viable trading system. The logistics system was extensively changed with a real revolution in logistics, which allowed more goods to be shipped on a wide range of routes at much lower prices. In the same way, credit chains were created between traders, which allowed the development of trade on commission and greatly simplified the wide-ranging commercial circuits. Both innovation created a more dynamic trading network, which enabled the creation of the great mass trade in the late Middle Ages.
