In the credit web at Padua from 14th to 15th centuries: between private banks, Jewish loans, hospitals, Monte di Pietà and the Lion family
Abstract
The aim of this research is the reconstruction of the credit web existing in Padua from XIV to XV century. It is built up with the action of the private banchi, the Jewish banchi, the hospitals, the Monte di pietà in connection with the credit action practised by the Lion’s family of Padua. It was one of the most important families in Padua, who had both a banco and a “statio de banco”,placed in the Palazzo della Ragione. For that it was recognised as one of the main actors of the credit and finance business in the city, being authorized to do that by the public power. If the main goal of these credit actors was to gain profit, there is no doubt that all of them were able to play deep social and welfare activities, both in the private and public field in the city of Padua ( but not only in this place).
