Credit operators and practices in use in Northern Italy between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries
Abstract
The essay examines the credit practices in use in Northern Italy between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and their characteristics: simple loans, deposits, credit sales and agistments. Credit operators often deal with other work activities and target the sector from time to time; however, it should be emphasized that credit often allows social ascent with examples known in Veneto and Lombardy. Tuscan, Lombard and Jewish moneylenders entered the credit market during the analysis period, as demonstrated in the case of the Patriarchate of Aquileia. Finally, the sources testify to lending methods managed by women both in the Jewish and Christian worlds, highlighted in particular in the respective cases of Trieste and Genoa.
