Marseille and colonial products facing the challenge of war (1750-1815)
Abstract
Based on data on French navigation and the balance of trade, this article presents, first of all, the fundamental role of Marseilles in the supply of colonial goods to the Mediterranean region during the 18th century. It then looks at the effects of maritime conflicts on this trade. Finally, it shows the profound transformations caused by the wars of the revolutionary and Napoleonic periods, when Marseilles lost control of the flow of colonial goods, which nevertheless continued to reach consumers in the Mediterranean on a massive scale thanks to the British or neutral trade.
