The Economics of Charity and the ‘Non-Market Goods’: The case of a Valencian Slave
Abstract
The aim of this article is to study, from a document kept at the Archivo del Reino de Valencia, the parable of Abdala, natural of the city of Algiers and presented to the Baile del Reino de Valencia in the year 1686 to be sold as a slave. Abdala, however, was ‘donated in charity' to the convent of the city’s Barefoot Trinitarians. According to the document in our possession, the lack of buyers interested in Abdala, an elderly man, led the Baile to donate him to the Trinitarians. The author of this article proposes a new reading of this document, making it as an exceptional case study of ‘good out of the market’ and a paradigmatic example of the ‘Economics of Charity' in the ancien régime.
