Bicentenary: what remains of the fiesta

Abstract

The article describes the myths and realities of 2010 in Argentina: a fundamental year for the national history, as the second centenary of independence, but also crucial for the present of the Country. The latter presented himself at the Bicentenary with a burden of unknowns and unresolved problems: the crisis, which ended in 2004, continues, in reality, to frustrate the dreams of citizens. Politicians seem incapable of leading the recovery and remain caught up in the network of sterile polemics. The second centenary, therefore, borns in a very different context from the first, when the state was prey to collective enthusiasm for a socio-economic rise that seemed unstoppable. At that time, millions of Europeans moved to the Plata in the hope of obtaining an opportunity for redemption. Now, it is the Argentines who are leaving. The former migrants, meanwhile, have remained here, becoming part of the Argentine nation. In this restless and changing scenario, the paper proposes a reflection on the current challenges faced by the Italian communities and on its role in the construction of Argentina in the next hundred years. 

L’articolo descrive miti e realtà del 2010 argentino: un anno fondamentale per la storia nazionale, in quanto secondo centenario dell’indipendenza, ma anche cruciale per il presente del Paese. Quest’ultimo si è presentato all’appuntamento del Bicentenario con un fardello di incognite e problemi irrisolti: la crisi, data per finita nel 2004, continua, in realtà, a frustrare i sogni dei cittadini. La politica sembra incapace di guidare la ripresa e resta imbrigliata nella rete di polemiche sterili. Il secondo centenario, dunque, nasce in un contesto molto diverso dal primo, quando lo Stato era preda dell’entusiasmo collettivo per un’ascesa socioeconomica che appariva inarrestabile. Allora, milioni di europei si trasferivano al Plata nella speranza di ottenere un’occasione di riscatto. Ora, sono gli argentini ad andar via. Gli ex migranti, nel frattempo, sono rimasti qui, diventando parte della nazione argentina. In questo scenario inquieto e cangiante, lo scritto propone una riflessione sulle sfide attuali che si trova ad affrontare le collettività italiana e sul suo ruolo nella costruzione dell’Argentina dei prossimi cento anni.
