Three museums and a monument. The memory of the African American civil rights movement
Abstract
Questo saggio intende discutere il tema della memoria del movimento per diritti civili in alcuni luoghi istituzioni, situati in siti significativi degli Stati Uniti del Sud. Inoltre si propone di affrontare il significato di tali istituzioni per la memoria collettiva del movimento. Sono stati scelti tre musei situati nel Sud: il the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center in Atlanta, il Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, il Lorraine Motel National Memorial di Memphis. Inoltre, verrà discusso l’impatto del Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington D.C. Il saggio comprenderà alcune informazioni su ciascun sito, oltre a riflessioni sul complesso dibattito che caratterizza la comunicazione della “memoria” a mezzo secolo di distanza dagli avvenimenti.
The article aims to discuss the institutional memory of the civil rights struggle in a few significant locations in the United States and the meaning of such institutions for collective memory. Three museums have been selected in the South: the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center in Atlanta, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the Lorraine Motel National Memorial in Memphis. In addition, there will be a discussion of Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington D.C. The discussion will include some background about each site, along with insights into the complex debate surrounding the communication of memory forty or fifty years after Freedom Struggle events took place.
